arts conference day 1

i was at an arts conference yesterday called "recreate". it is really good to go and get some good teaching. yesterday i heard barbara nicolisi speak about art and culture. she is a screen writer in hollywood. she had an interesting perspective that i was soaking up. in a nutshell, she said the art should be beautiful. otherwise no one will want it. the church is the patron of the arts. but if you ask anyone on the street,"who is the patron..?" no one would say "the church". hollywood is the hub of global culture.the church should make a decision to make good art. everything the church should does should be done with excellence. but, the church has a reputation for doing art very badly. the music, drama, movies, have been the worst on the planet, according to the world. they laugh at how bad it is sometimes. if we have a message wrapped in bad art then the message is missed.
we should do our best to be the best. we need to spend the money and the time to do things right. we let 2nd best be acceptable. think about how powerful the passion of the christ was. same message but great art. see the result.that is an extreme example that should prove the point. i will keep this short. i am sure that i could write about this for hours. leave a comment, good or bad, and i will continue on this later if i need to.

Truuuu dat, yo.

Oh, I did that speech today on becoming a youth evangelist. it was neat. I kinda forgot about the fact that I was getting a grade on it and just wanted to somehow make the people in my class think about their lives and where they get their joy if they even have joy. Well, lots of people told me they liked it and I seemed passionate about it. I also got an A. Whee.

Mmkay, I didn't actually comment on what you said. My thoughts..

Well, I think part of the problem is the fact that hollywood is where the money's at. Christians don't even want to make Christian films because worldy things are more..entertaining? Sin is enticing. So, people pay to see jacked up stuff, and producers/playwrights/whoever know that. So, we lack talent in the arena of entertainment creaters or what have you. I think people like yourself and finally the good Christian bands beginning to emerge are a step in the right direction because Christianity isn't boring when someone who has talent can convey a message in an intriguing and/or amusing way.

when it comes to creativity, God is at the top of that list. there is no one more creative than God. So why is it that we think that Hollywood is where all of the creativity is at? Shame on all of us for giving them all of the credit for anything that's even remotely creative and also for not stepping up to the challenge. if we have access to the most creative being of all time, then why aren't we using that to our benefit. as we follow God and decide to use the talents that he's given us, we absolutely should be doing everything possible to be creative and reach our ever-changing culture. What's sad is that it seems as though the "Christian community" doesn't care about standards of excellence the way that the rest of the world does.

that was my point exactly. we are connected to the creator. we should set the standard.we should encourage young artists in our churches to be great at what they do.they are the prophets of the future

we need leaders in the church to step up and start leading creatively. when this happens the entire church will begin to jump on board. there is creativity in the church...it's just not being tapped into. if churches would just tap into the younger generation that is a part of their body and give them creative freedom, i believe that we would all be surprised. sadly, it's a lot less likely for the older generation who isn't already thinking this way to change now. however, if we tap into the younger generation that has the creative juices flowing right now, we will be seeing alot different churches 10yrs from now. "Content" may be king but, if content lacks packaging then it is in fact irrelevant.
