i was thinking earlier about halloween. when i was a kid i heard alot about how evil halloween was, the devils holiday. i dont hear much of that anymore. i wonder, do people still think of halloween as a satanic holiday or just another reason to party.is it just a holiday? is it just for fun? i wanna know from you guys, what do you think and what do you hear about halloween. i wanna hear from everyone who reads this. i am very curious about this. what are people thinking about halloween?

Personally I have no problem with Halloween. I think it is what you make it, I mean my church has a Hallowed King fall festival type thing that they do. It is an outreach to a lot of the kids in the area. But for some people all they see is the negative connotations so for them they may need to just kind of ignore Halloween and move on to Thanksgiving. I just have fun with Halloween, I don't take it all that seriously for example this year I am dressing up as a brick wall how serious can I be as a brick wall, honestly.
To each his own. If you think Halloween is a bad thing I won't try to change your mind, but I'm not going to stop dressing up as inanimate objects just because someone thinks it is a horrible holiday.
I'm really indifferent about Halloween. Growing up, I always dressed in a costume, but my Mom discouraged me from the really horrid, scarey ones. My church also has a Fall Festival but does not recognize Halloween. If I remember correctly, Halloween started as All Hallows Eve in an attempt to ward off evil. I think it was a pagan practice. I do believe what we "fill" our head with we can eventually become..that's why I discourage my daughter from reading, watching, etc. certain types of material. As a parent, I allow my daughter to dress up...but not as the wicked, scarey stuff. I guess my Mom taught me well.

My friend Alan has what I believe is a good post on the subject at his blog (alansblog.com).
When discussing Halloween (a term that means the Eve of All Saints Day) it is interesting that people who object to it are willing to celebrate Fall Festival. Fall Festivals and equinox celebrations have an extremely pagan history - they celebrate the "gods" of the harvest and other things like that. Easter is holiday that we as Christians took over Easter(the previous celebration to Ester - not the one in the Bible)that was a fertility celebration (thus the bunnies), but I am not willing to give it back - I now see it as only the celebration of Christ's death and resurrection.
So long story short, if we do not cause someone else to stumble then I think that Easter and Halloween are fine to celebrate.

i think halloween is just another day to party. but i had substitute teacher last week and she was like spazing out that we even thought about partying on halloween. im baptist and i m pretty sure that my church doesnt think its the devils birthday. what about Brock what do you think
So I typed a long comment this morning and then our electricity went off and I lost it when I tried to post it. So disheartening...I didn't have the patience or time at that point to do it again. But, here it is a few hours later and I now have the grace to try this again. :)
Basically, I have no strong opinions on it either way. Or, maybe a better way to put it is that I have opinions on both sides of the spectrum...I can see both sides, but don't have a strong conviction about what to actually do...a blanket answer for everyone kind of thing.
We don't celebrate it. Joel never celebrated it growing up and I'm O.K. with not celebrating it just to be on the "safe" side of the "controversy." I think there are many factors to why people do or don't celebrate it. Joel's family now all lives in the Salem, Mass. area where there are witches galore year round (real ones, not the dress up kind). Lots of truly evil things happen at Halloween. So, there it is pretty extreme. Like I said, we don't celebrate it, but whenever we were part of churches that had Fall Festivals, we would go.
So, as you can see...not a strong passionate opinion from me. Is it O.K. in parts of the country that don't really think anything of it? Or, then I think...hmm...maybe that is just a plan of the enemy...just because the evil things aren't as blatant (as in Salem for instance) doesn't mean they aren't happening, if only in the spiritual realm. Aren't we all supposed to be extreme...not trying to get as close to the line as we can get, but trying to get as close to Jesus as we can get? But...then again...is it wrong to dress a baby up as a pea pod and go around to friends' houses getting candy? I just don't know.
Yeah, no strong opinion. But, the real question is...what do YOU think? By the way, can't believe that you don't hear people talking about it. I hear people discussing it all the time.
More thoughts from the shower (the one I just took)...
Sorry I'm being so rambly about this topic, but I have family and friends who are on both extreme sides of the fence on this one. So, you know...I've been thinking about it for years.
I've read 3 blog posts from people who were on either side of the fence in the last couple of days. The one that is O.K. with Halloween went on the point that basically we win...we give the devil too much credit and basically shouldn't be looking for demons in every corner. I guess that point is the basis for my beliefs (I think I may have finally figured it out) on the subject.
Basically, I don't think we give the devil too much credit. I think that we aren't on guard enough. I DO NOT live in fear, but there is a difference in living in fear and living on guard and being wise. What if the devil is granted a foothold in your life by celebrating Halloween? The bottom line for me is that I don't know. But, I would guess on the side that he probably does. Therefore, although I am all about the fact that we can and do win against the devil (God in us is much stronger than anything the devil throws our way), still, it is a battle that we have to go through in order to have victory. I just want to eliminate the battles in my life. Why risk it? I can personally easily sacrifice dressing up and going trick-or-treating if it means that the devil doesn't gain any ground in my life or the lives of my children.
Now, does that mean no Fall Festivals...no "costume parties" that are innocently labeled and not called "Halloween Parties" even though they happen to be right around Halloween...the things that supposedly aren't celebrating Halloween? I just don't know...maybe it depends? I seriously don't know.
But...on the other hand of things...the people's whose blogs I read that were on the side of not celebrating Halloween...well, they were a little obnoxious. Sometimes people with those beliefs come across as condemning the people who do celebrate Halloween, even making fun of the people who do...seeming a little too know-it-all and self-righteous for my taste. There are things that I have definite opinions about and sometimes I have to take a stand...sometimes I'm sure my stand is even received as self-righteous. But, there is a tone you can use and a way you can say things that aren't offensive (to the people who aren't offended by every little thing anyway). The people who don't practice this also gives way to the devil...they might as well dress up and go get some candy. :)
michawn thats enough
I feel the need to publicly address Pedro's question...
YES!! We have an FX hoodie, and it's totally sweet. Pretty much the coolest thing I've ever worn. Everyone should own one. Or maybe two, in case one is in the wash.
Now how you get such a hoodie...that's an excellent question. Other than coming to a Freedom Experience...uh...email Kim, perhaps? She can hook you up. Kim@verticalministries.com
and I'm not sure how much they cost. She can answer that for you too. They are nice. They make our sub-arctic temperature office feel nice.
Did I mention it's pretty much the coolest thing I've ever worn?
hee hee hee. sorry...i warned you i was rambly on the subject. it's not like i comment on your blog that often, so guess i'm just getting all my comments allowances out on one post.
Good looking Scotty
