thoughts on halloween

after reading your comments and the recommended blog and michawns brief chapter on the halloween, i am ready to speak.

christians get so upset when they change christmas to "holiday". whats the dang difference? is it halloween or fall festival? sounds to me like it is the same thing. any holiday is what you make out of it. is christmas a holy holiday? i dont think so. christmas in america is about buying gifts decorating trees and spending way too much money buying junk for people who dont need it. there is nothing holy about that. but, there are those who make christmas a celebration of the birth of jesus. thats awesome. also, whats holy about easter? nothing. its an easter bunny hiding eggs for some unkown reason. but there are those who make it a special time where it is ALL about jesus and the resurrection. (i.e. the greek orthodox church). my point is every holiday is just a holiday. it is what you do with it. the heart is the issue. i celebrated halloween last year. it was one of the best nights of my life. i had a blast with my friends, having some good ole fellowship. we went christmas caroling for halloween. everyone thought it was hilarious. we made halloween a big joke. we didnt celebrate the devil. if anything we were making fun of it all. singing christmas songs at each house we went to and not asking for candy was a big shocker to the neighborhood.
christians are hypocritical for getting upset at people for saying "happy holiday" when all the time they are having fall festival as a replacement for halloween. i know that not everyone agrees with me on this, and thats ok. i wanna point out the inconsistency that we have. the world is watching. what are we saying? how are we being perceived?
so, if you wanna go dress up eat candy go ahead. check your heart. if you are feeling conviction then dont. if you are doing for the devil then, um well we should talk. i dont see people who celebrate christmas as unbelievers converting because they unwrapped a fruitcake. i dont think you are going to end up a satanist if you eat the candy. but you will loose your teeth.

I totally and completely lied. One more thought...

Something that I thought of as an option for us at one point was to, instead of not celebrate at all...not participate, we could use the opportunity and counteract the possible enemy's work. We could dress the kids up in cute outfits, still take them trick-or-treating, but instead of just taking from them we would give the people something in return. A teaching tape (like a good one, nothing lame), maybe even a brock gill dvd. :) Anyhoo, the point was to 'be all things to all people' kind of thing. Not isolate, but participate with the intentions of counteracting and reaching out. I know that is the intentions of some Fall Festivals. I have truly always hated the whole "Christian boycott" type of mentality. Although I don't think that not celebrating Halloween really falls into that...it's just choosing to not celebrate a holiday. But, just another thought on the list of Michawn's Halloween thoughts...

You did ask.
